Bi-Weekly Confusion

Once upon a fortnight, the English language throws me for a loop. Take the term “bi-weekly”, for example. It can mean twice per week or once every two weeks. While I appreciate the fact that some words have multiple meanings, the intended meaning can usually be inferred from context. Not so much when it comes to bi-weekly. Why is such a potentially important term left to such uncertainty? Which dosing schedule did your doctor intend for your life saving medicine when she wrote “take bi-weekly” on your prescription? Did your parole officer mean to check in twice per week when he used the term bi-weekly? The consequences in such scenarios could be dire. As such, I vote to bring back the term fortnight and limit the meaning of bi-weekly to twice per week. Who’s with me?
